Home Security Tips for Living in an Apartment

Regardless of where you live, it’s important to feel safe and secure. You want to protect your family members and possessions from potential thieves and intruders. Doing this in an apartment can be more challenging than in a home. Because you do own your apartment unit, there are some things you might not be able to do. Luckily, there are plenty of DIY home security systems. If you rent an apartment, learn about some effective ways to deter unwanted guests.

Keep Some Lights On

Burglars and home invaders are attracted to darkness. When such people are on the lookout for a place to break into, they will target places where they believe no one is home. If there are no lights on inside your apartment, chances are higher that someone would try to get inside than if your lights were on. Leaving lights on may not always be practical, such as when you retire for the night. However, this tactic is effective when you are away from your apartment. Try keeping a front-room light on in the evening or at night. Even a light above the porch or balcony can serve as a sign to people that you are at home.

Lock the Door and Use the Deadbolt

This may seem like an obvious tip, but people neglect it. Always lock your door when you leave your apartment. Lock at night when you go to bed. You may also want to do this at all times during the day, even if you are inside. Locking the deadbolt provides an added measure of security. If your apartment does not have a deadbolt, talk to your landlord about installing one.

Secure the Windows

The front door is not always the entry point of choice for intruders. Prowlers and burglars will look for any way possible to access your apartment. In many instances, windows are an inviting option. Apartment tenants often forget to lock windows. Some older units may not even have functioning locks on the windows. Talk to your landlord about covering the windows or putting on bars. It will be almost impossible for an intruder to quickly get in through your windows if these barriers are in place.

Get a Dog

Many apartment buildings do not allow pets of any kind. Dogs are often at the top of the list of forbidden animals on the premises. But if your apartment does permit dogs, man’s best friend can be an excellent security system. Criminals are much less likely to bother picking your apartment building over another one if you have a dog. It may be helpful to have a “beware of dog” sign on your front door. The loud, intimidating bark of a dog can also be enough to send an intruder past your apartment.

Ask About Security Cameras

Some apartment complexes may have a surveillance system on the property. If you are not sure, talk to your landlord. A series of cameras around your apartment can scare off burglars and mischievous people. There are digital security systems that allow you to watch your apartment on your smartphone while you are on the go or away from your home for work or a vacation.

Talk About Getting an Alarm System

Last but not least, an alarm system can be one of the most effective ways to keep your home safe. Some complexes may not allow such an addition. Your landlord may be willing to put up this cost. Or, you can offer to pay for one for your own unit. These systems come in digital and analog forms. People who know your apartment has an alarm system will often not bother trying to break in and look for easier targets.

If you are worried about a lack of security in your apartment building, consider implementing these tips. Do not take risks by ignoring your security needs. These tips and guidelines can give you the peace of mind you need when you are sleeping at night or away from your home. Your family members and personal items are far too important to ignore this level of home protection.
