How To Prepare Your Social Media Profiles To Help College Admissions

Social media is a large part of just about everybody’s life. It adds quality to one’s lifestyle and helps keep people in touch. There is another side to it as well. Social media profiles have been known to hurt job prospects if the profile shows questionable behavior.

When you are getting ready to apply to college, it is a good idea to make sure that you are doing everything you can to get accepted. In many ways, your social media can actually help you during the admissions process. Many college admissions consulting specialists advise you to go through your social media accounts to make sure they don’t hurt your chances.

In this article, we will go over what your social media needs to look like to help you get accepted to college.

Clean it up

Everybody is allowed to have fun and even make some questionable moves in life. It’s all part of growing up and maturing. That said, it shouldn’t be advertised for the entire world to see. College admissions departments are on the lookout for these types of posts on social media of their applicants.

The reason being is that they want people who are mature enough to be a valuable part of the student body. It is a good idea to go through your accounts and remove any posts where it shows any kind of bad decision-making.

Posts of overdrinking, offensive or lewd behavior, and memes made in bad taste all need to be deleted.

Begin curating

Every part of the application process involves you putting yourself in the best possible light. This should also include your social media. Admissions departments are paying attention to your social media. They aren’t just looking for the bad things to deny you. They also want to see what makes you tick as well.

Start posting your positive experiences to highlight your character. If you volunteer, then make some posts about your routine. Any hobby that you do should also be part of your profile.

The informational part of your profile also needs to be complete. It should almost read like a resume. Make sure that your education and work experience are listed on your profiles.

Also, avoid making references to other colleges you have applied to. In fact, don’t mention any colleges in particular as it could be a bit of a problem for the admissions department.

Be consistent

Publish posts on a regular basis. If you go dark for a while and then suddenly begin posting several times per day it looks obvious that it is done for the benefit of the admissions department.

The worst thing you can do is to delete your social media completely. Social media provides a more complete picture of the person applying. Without it, the admissions department will have a hard time determining who you are as a person. And if the choice comes down to you and somebody with a more complete social media presence then it might be the difference between acceptance and rejection.
