Home Security: How To Make Your Home Safer

Our homes are our sacred spaces and the idea of an intruder encroaching on your territory is utterly terrifying at worst, nauseating at best. Now we’re emerging back into normal life, and venturing away from our homes for longer and more frequently, it’s important to step up your home security game to keep you, your family, and your belongings safe. Read on to discover our top tips.

Add a camera

A camera may seem a little excessive but it’s the ultimate in home security. It can record everything that goes on around your property and more importantly, act as a deterrent to any potential burglars. There are some spectacular cameras on the scene nowadays and Vivint is one of our tops picks as they offer customized systems to protect you best.

Increase your locks – everywhere

We all know the importance of having heavy-duty locks on our front doors but it’s other ground-floor doors that are often overlooked. Can you honestly say that your side or back doors are as well protected as the front? If so – very impressive! If not – have no fear, adding extra locks is a quick and easy fix to up your security.

Lock up your tools

Burglars rarely carry tools with them for fear of getting caught. Instead, they use items left lying around or nearby the property. If they can access your crowbar, you’re spoon-feeding them the tools to break in. Ensure that any garages or sheds are secured properly with good quality locks.

Monitor inside your home

Make sure that you’re not investing time and money in the outside of the property, just to let yourself down with its contents inside. First, make sure any keys are stored well away from any doors leading to the outside. If the keys to your Mercedes-Benz are beckoning them from your hall table, they’re more likely to try and get inside. Ditto for your personal information. Make sure calendars aren’t visible from the outside. If you’re actively displaying your vacation dates and when you’ll be away from home, you’re basically giving them an open invitation. Also, make sure any tech devices inside are protected with strong passwords. If your laptop is stolen you may lament about lost work or family photos but a burglar is more interested in the data stored inside than the tech itself. Bank accounts, shopping websites with stored passwords, credit card statements on your emails – that’s the real valuables.

If you’re out of your home for a long time, purchase a few cheap plug timers. They’re easy to use and you can set lights, gadgets, and radio to turn on and off periodically whilst you’re away. a house that looks lived in is less likely to be robbed. If you have a friendly neighbor, ask them to park on your property when you’re away so it seems as though there is someone in the house.
