Creating a Workstation at Home

The COVID-19 global health crisis has put the world in a plunge. Economies, businesses, and communities have all been hit by the pandemic. Most companies and employees have shifted to a work-from-home management set-up to continue business operations despite the circumstances.

Whether you started working from home abruptly or have been doing it for years, you need to establish a dedicated workspace that will support you and increase productivity while working remotely. This remote work management system can be an excellent opportunity to balance work and living, but it can also blur the line between home and work if you fail to create a system and division.

Take a look at the remote working tips below to help you set up an efficient home office. Let’s get started!

Determine what you need

Before you start shopping for an office desk, drawers, and other things, identify what you’ll need for the work you do first. If you primarily work with just a laptop and a mouse, you might only require a small table with ample space for taking down notes. However, it may entail a larger table for multiple monitors if you work as a designer or artist.

List down the things you’ll be needing for a home office to help you find the right furniture to set up the space that meets those requirements.

Assign your workspace

Your home office should be in a quiet part of the house, where you’ll have some privacy and less distraction. If there’s a spare room you can convert into your workspace, do that. But if there’s none, you can consider some areas that would make for a good workspace, like a portion of your bedroom or under the stairs. If your home offers abundance in space, take advantage of that.

If work allows and you really can’t find a proper space, the dining table is fine, as long as you can get your tasks done before it’s needed for dinner or other activities.

Get the right furniture

Looking for furniture pieces is one of the most exciting parts of setting up a home office. But with the various options in the market, add to that the budget restriction and space limitations, it can be difficult to find the perfect furniture for your space. Here are some of the things you should keep in mind when shopping for a desk and chair.

  • Chair – There are many chairs out there that aren’t designed for prolonged computer use, resulting in back pain (e.g., dining chairs or monoblocs). If you have the budget, opt for an adjustable office chair that provides lumbar support.
  • Desk – When it comes to the desk, get one that’s of the right size for your needs and space. You want your desk to have enough room for your laptop or computer, writing tools, and phone and allow you to work comfortably on various tasks.

Establish your work environment

When it comes to your surrounding space, you’d want to make sure that you have adequate light that will let you read and work without straining your eyes. If your space has access to natural light, even better. Apart from lighting, ensure that the area has good ventilation. A stuffy room could give you a headache or leave you feeling drained.

Summing it up

Regardless if you use your home office as a freelancer or an employee, it’s essential that you sort out the basic things necessary for your work and set up solutions so that your workspace functions just how you need it. By planning and decorating your home office space to your liking, you’ll enjoy working from home more.
