Everything You Need to Know About Same-Day Crowns

Dental crowns are designed to restore teeth that have been damaged. Teeth may become damaged due to trauma or tooth decay. Discoloration may also impact the quality of your smile. Dental crowns may serve as the ideal solution to treat your dental issue.

Decayed teeth can usually be treated by using dental crowns. They are similar to a cap that fits over the decayed tooth. They are also designed to last for several years and have a natural appearance so that people will not tell the difference.

Here, our focus will be on everything that you need patient’s gum-day crowns.

What are Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns serve as a vital element of restorative dental care. They serve as a cap of sorts that is set over the affected tooth. Same-day crowns are usually fabricated from ceramics or porcelain.

They will reach down to the gum line and are designed to encase your tooth without causing any discomfort. Their natural appearance will also ensure that your smile remains natural and beautiful.

Moreover, they are designed to last several years. Your damaged tooth will be protected from subsequent harm while also appearing as if no work was performed on it.

Milled crowns are made very quickly. Most will be made in 30-minutes or less and your dentist’s office. First, a digital impression of your damaged tooth is taken by a state-of-the-art device.

After the specifications have been taken, the dentist will use a dental mill to cut the crown. Porcelain is commonly used for most modern same-day crowns.

Dental mills can also be used to make on-lays and veneers as well.

What are the Benefits of Same-Day Crowns?

Post-procedure sensitivity is eliminated, as the crowns do not contain any metal. The entire procedure is done in one visit, making same-day crowns very fast and convenient.

No gooey pastes are used either, and same-day crowns are durable and designed to last between ten to fifteen years. Same-day crowns are very comfortable, and most patients forget that they even have them after a few days.

They will also prevent injury and decay. Conventional crowns will require that the dentist set a temporary crown before a permanent version can be made.

The problem with temporary crowns is that they are prone to becoming dislodged, leaving your exposed tooth vulnerable to decay, injury, and general discomfort.

Another benefit of same-day crowns is that they are designed to replicate the natural appearance of your teeth,  as they are made with porcelain or ceramics. Interestingly, crowns were made with gold in the past. They were also fused with metal.

Unfortunately, traditional crowns displayed a black line along the patient’s gum, visible to the naked eye. The good news is modern same-day crowns are far more discreet.

Perhaps most important of all, a same-day crown will restore the function of your decayed or injured tooth. You will have no pain, bleeding, or swelling after the crown is set.

The infection, if applicable, will be treated via a filling, root canal, or antibiotics, and you will be able to smile, eat, and talk as you normally would.

The crown is also permanently bonded to the affected tooth, so you do not have to worry about it becoming loose or dislodged over time.

You will also save money and time, as you won’t have to make multiple appointments or take several days off from work or school to enjoy your same-day crown.

As can be seen, the benefits of dental crowns are numerous, so please speak to your dentist if you would like to learn more about how you can benefit from same-day dental crowns.

How to Take Care of Same-Day Crowns

As mentioned, same-day crowns are durable and are designed to last for ten to fifteen years when they are made and set by a qualified dentist. However, they are not invulnerable.

As with most things in life, they will begin to degrade in terms of their quality due to the near-constant pressure they are exposed to daily.

The good news is there are many things that you can do to help them last longer. For example, you should avoid hard or sticky foods, such as gum, caramel, taffy, or very crunchy foods.

It is also imperative that you brush and floss regularly. Most dentists recommend that patients brush their teeth three times a day after each meal. You should also floss at least twice a day. Dental picks may also help patients that have trouble using conventional floss.

Moreover, you should visit your dentist at least once every six months. They will perform a thorough checkup of your teeth and gums to ensure that everything is in order and will perform the necessary dental treatments if needed.

A night guard can also help protect your crown from being damaged, as your teeth may be vulnerable to harm while you sleep. Those who grind their teeth while they sleep should also wear a nightguard to prevent serious damage to their teeth.

You should also avoid smoking and excess alcohol use, as drugs and alcohol may damage your crown as well as your gums and teeth. Smoking has also been linked to oral cancer.

Try to follow your dentist’s orders to the letter. Eating a healthy and balanced diet, brushing and flossing regularly, and visiting your dentist every six months should help increase the lifespan of your crowns.

You should also not wait for dental issues to become bigger. Make an appointment as soon as you notice anything unusual, such as discoloration, pain, swelling, pus, bleeding, trouble eating, talking, or breathing.
